GB Station Reivew of the Code Breaker..........
This Pelican's Got Wings - The Code Breaker goes after cheating hearts Following in the wake of the stealthily popular Game Shark cheat code machine for the Game Boy comes Pelican Accessories' Code Breaker. For some gamers, cheating is a lifestyle choice, and we don't ask and we don't tell. And since the Game Genie bit the dust back in the dawn of the 1990s, deviants have had to rely on the Shark for their code hacking. With the advent of the Code Breaker, gamers now have more cheating choices at their fingertips. This is great news if you just can't get past those acid-burping transvestite mice on level 8. Even purists who won't touch codes with a ten-foot link cable will get a kick out of the sometimes conventional, sometimes strange things the Code Breaker will let them get away with. The Code Breaker measures about 10 centimeters high with a skinny base that slides right into the Game Boys' pak slot. The top of the Code Breaker bulges out 3 centimeters, holding a AAA battery and sporting an On/Off switch and a Freeze button. It comes in one all-purpose color: black. The design is awkwardly top heavy, but functional. Now that we've toured the grounds, let's take a step inside.... What separates the Code Breaker from its predecessors is that it's much more than just a code bank. Other devices let you enter codes or choose from a preset roster of codes. The Code Breaker does all that and then some, and what results is pretty impressive. Code Dependent - Pelican provides its own list of games with unique Code Breaker codes, and these can be added to from a list of codes at Pelican's Code Breaker website (the site was not operational at the time this article was posted). Many of the included codes are typical hacks, like invincibility, unlimited time, all weapons, etc., and seemed to work great on the games I used to test them. There are approximately 200 games on the Code Breaker with built-in codes, although a few of the newer ones (Tarzan, Super Mario Bros. DX) take only partial advantage of the device's features and require a patch to use some codes. These limitations are a small letdown, but since a sampling of these games won't even work with the Game Shark, there's no point in gritching too much. And if you've got a library of Game Shark codes you've memorized by heart, count yourself lucky. The Code Breaker lets you use these too, increasing its versatility by tons. Even better is that you can enter as many of these codes as you'd like so that you never have to feel the sting of death and the burning shame of small inventories at the same time. For those who want to be mini-Kevin Mitnicks, there's also a Trainer mode that will let you create your own codes by figuring out which code bank and address numbers change when certain game events happen. This option is cooly innovative, but recommended mostly for those with a technical bent. Anyone, however, can use it with a little practice. Hamburger-Free Code Helpers - One of the Code Breaker's sweetest features is its Real-Time Save and Restore. The device's Freeze button halts the game midstream and transports you back to the Code Breaker menus. From the Helper menu, you can save your game at the exact freeze point and return to that point at a later time. Very useful for those games that don't have an interrupt-save option. The Code Breaker showcases other Helper capabilities, these ones of a more dubious value. For soaking up every little detail on-screen, you can put your game into Slow-Motion mode. E-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y f-a-s-c-i-n-a-t-i-n-g, kind of like watching a lava lamp. Extremely annoying are the four levels of rumble (hence the battery) that you can enable. Pat yourself on the head if you just leave this option off. Tool Time - Last, and probably most unusual, is a Power Tools menu in the Code Breaker that gives gamers the chance to do some interesting experimenting. One of the tools, Word Scout, lets you read text from games like the Legend of Zelda or Final Fantasy series, as well as search for passwords. Another tool is the Message Writer, which acts as a tiny Notepad in which messages can be written and even printed if a Game Boy Printer is attached. The Memory Viewer gives the truly daring a chance to examine and modify a game's memory banks. All of these features are fun, but are too quirky to be used often by the average gamer. Of more worth are the Read, Write, and Erase Game Save tools. You can read a game's save information to the Code Breaker, then write that info to another cart with the same memory capacity, or erase the save information from a game to start over or clean a corrupt save file. Breaking Ground - Although some of the features on the Code Breaker are susceptible to second-guessing, the overall package is one that's sure to replace the Game Shark as the sterling standard of cheating. The Code Breaker takes codes into some new territory, and offers more convenience and flexibility when it comes to manipulating and exploring the wild hair possibilities in your favorite games.
